Crackling or Silent Door Speakers? What Infiniti Owners Should Check

A crackling door speaker does not automatically need replacing. The fault could be a loose connector, damaged wiring, vibrating door trim, or a problem feeding sound to the speaker. Complete silence needs the same careful diagnosis. Before ordering parts for your Infiniti, establish where the problem occurs, what triggers it, and whether the speaker receives a usable audio signal.

Start with the audio source and settings

Park somewhere quiet and play a familiar recording at moderate volume. Center the balance and fader, return bass and treble to neutral, and temporarily disable optional sound effects.

Compare two sources, such as a strong FM station and a downloaded track played through a supported connection. If the problem happens only with one phone, cable, recording, or station, investigate that source first. A replacement door speaker will reproduce a defective signal too.

Use the balance and fader to move sound toward each corner. Listen close to the affected door without increasing the volume excessively. The 2013 QX owner’s manual explains that model’s tone and balance controls; consult your own model’s manual for exact instructions.

Identify whether the fault affects one door or the whole system

The pattern helps decide where to investigate next:

  • One door stays silent: Check that speaker, its connector, the wiring to it, and its amplifier channel.

  • Several speakers stop together: Check shared power supplies, amplifier operation, and the audio unit before buying multiple speakers.

  • Sound cuts out when the door moves: Suspect an intermittent connection or damaged wiring around the door opening.

  • Noise changes with engine speed: Have the charging system, grounds, and interference sources checked.

These are diagnostic clues, not proof of a particular failed part. Write down whether the problem occurs immediately, after the cabin warms up, or following rain. Intermittent faults are easier to trace when the conditions are repeatable.

If the display freezes or restarts at the same time, include that in the diagnosis. Ask the technician to check model-specific software guidance before authorizing replacement of the audio unit.

Separate speaker distortion from rattling door trim

Empty the door pocket first. Coins, bottles, and loose objects can buzz against the panel when bass notes play.

Replay the passage that triggers the noise and gently steady the surrounding trim. Avoid pressing the grille into the speaker cone. If the buzz changes, inspect the panel clips, grille attachment, speaker mounting screws, and sealing gasket.

A damaged cone, deteriorated surround, or rubbing voice coil can also distort sound. However, crackling heard at the grille alone does not establish which component is responsible. Compare both sides using the same recording and settings. Stop increasing the volume once the distortion is obvious; louder testing adds little useful information.

Inspect connectors, door wiring, and moisture damage

If the fault began after window, lock, or door-panel work, inspect the connections disturbed during that repair. A plug can look attached while its locking tab is not fully engaged.

Panel removal procedures vary by model. Follow the correct service instructions, including battery disconnection and any required waiting period. Avoid probing airbag wiring or connectors.

With the circuit safely isolated, look for loose terminals, corrosion, pinched wires, damaged insulation, and broken connector locks. Inspect the flexible wiring area between the body and door when sound changes as the door opens.

Water staining or corrosion near the speaker calls for checking the moisture barrier, seals, and drainage. Correct the water problem before installing another speaker. Keep factory drains open, and do not pack absorbent material around the speaker as a makeshift rattle repair.

Confirm speaker failure before buying a replacement

A technician can separate a faulty speaker from a faulty circuit by checking the signal at the connector and testing with a known-good speaker of the correct specification. This is especially useful when the original speaker looks undamaged.

Resistance checks must be made with power off and the speaker disconnected from the vehicle circuit. An open reading can indicate a broken voice coil or internal connection. A normal resistance reading does not prove that the speaker plays cleanly, and DC resistance is not identical to its rated impedance.

Avoid assuming every Infiniti speaker should measure the same number of ohms. Factory audio systems differ, and front and rear drivers may have different roles.

For widespread silence, use the vehicle’s fuse information and wiring diagram. Replace a failed fuse only with the specified rating. If it fails again, diagnose the circuit instead of repeatedly replacing it, as the QX owner’s fuse guidance advises.

Match the replacement to the exact installation

Once testing confirms the failure, compare the original speaker with the replacement listing. Check the vehicle identification number, model year, factory audio package, door position, and full part number. Also compare the connector, mounting tabs, gasket, and available installation depth. Matching diameter alone is insufficient.

For example, AutoMan Spare Parts lists a pre-owned QX56/QX80 rear-left door speaker with part number 28156JM20A. Treat this as a candidate to verify against your original unit, rather than assuming it fits every Infiniti bearing either model name.

The site also has a QX56/QX80 door-speaker listing referencing 28156JM20A, 28157JM20A, and 265174103. Confirm exactly which speakers and quantities are included. Multiple numbers in one listing do not establish that those parts are interchangeable.

For a US-specification left-hand-drive vehicle, the driver’s side is left. If a listing mixes left, right, driver, or passenger descriptions, ask for confirmation using the part label and actual-item photos before ordering.

Check the installation before refitting the panel

Secure the replacement with the correct gasket and hardware, and route wiring clear of the window mechanism. Following the service procedure, test the audio before fully reinstalling the door panel. Check window travel only after loose wiring and tools are safely clear.

Then refit the moisture barrier and trim correctly and repeat the original listening test. Confirm that the repaired door plays cleanly and that no new panel buzz appears.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace just one Infiniti door speaker?

Yes, if the replacement matches the original specification and the opposite speaker is healthy. Replacing a pair is not automatically necessary.

Does a replacement door speaker need programming?

A like-for-like passive speaker normally does not. Replacing an amplifier or audio control unit can involve different configuration requirements.

Should front and rear door speakers sound identical?

Not necessarily. Factory tuning and speaker duties can differ. Compare equivalent left and right positions when assessing a suspected fault.

Will a battery reset repair a blown speaker?

No. A reset cannot repair a torn cone or damaged voice coil. Use only the model’s prescribed reset procedure for suspected software issues.
